This entire series is one of my all-time favorites, and it's just as good to read as an adult as it was as a kid.One nitpick: while I'm thankful these are finally available for the Kindle (long overdue), and they are as great a read as always, it appears that Mercer Mayer's classic illustrations are not included. I don't understand why that is, as these illustrations add a great deal of atmosphere to the original books and I really wish they were included here. Perhaps the Kindle files will be updated someday. I almost knocked off a star or two just for that, but ultimately these are great books nonetheless, and the fault lies only in the Kindle version in particular.
My husband bought this for our 9 year old son because he enjoyed this series as a kid. I had to laugh when my son came out of his room saying this was a bad book because the boys were skinny dipping! He had never heard of this before. I told him that makes me a bad person then. He finished the book and asked for more.
Great stories. Think of it like "little house on the prairie" but for rambunctious boys. Funny and fast reads for youth or adults and one of the best early reader books to get boys interested in reading but understand these stories are about a kid that gets in trouble a lot for schemes to raise money in settled western town.
This is a WONDERFUL old series that EVERY parent should read with their kids, especially sons. I'm on book two doing a chapter or so a night with my 6 and 10 year olds. They are absolutely fascinated by "How people lived way back then."
The story is set around the turn of the century in a small rural town, where indoor plumbing is a new and exotic prospect. The story is fun because, in part, it is told from the perspective of the younger brother who idolizes his older brother, the "great brain" -- a charming conniver. Great read-aloud for 6 and up. You will have to explain things like outhouses and the fact that 10 cents a week allowance was worth working for, or that children had a lot of freedom to explore and play a hundred years ago. It's a great story with some social history mixed in. I really love this series.
Have read this book to all my children. Purchased for friends, and reread many times. Each chapter is a story in itself. Treat yourself and buy all the other ones. The adult books are also great.
I read these books as a child and loved them. So happy to find it. Great stories for kids. I'll be reading this to my five year old son.
Kids don't enjoy reading it, some of the words are a bit archaic I think. I do read this to them (Grades 3 and 1) and they love hearing me read it (I try to jazz up some of the less interesting passages, I'm sure that helps).
