From Publishers Weekly

From even a glance at the flan recipe on the endpapers, young readers will guess they're in for a treatAand the author-illustrator team who created On Ramon's Farm doesn't disappoint. Geeslin weaves elements of Mexican culture into a magical tale with love and food at its core. In their tiny Mexican village, Nanita's cobbler father works so hard that he has no time to smile, much less make Nanita a pair of new shoes for her impending First Communion. Nanita therefore takes on the task herself, fashioning multicolored shoes out of leather scraps. Once on her feet, the shoes magically lead her to the desert home of a cruel ranchero, where she is pressed into service as a Cinderella-like house servant. When a special parrot arrives in the household, he teaches Nanita the secret to making great flan and also helps her find a way to rejoin her father. The language is compelling and the story satisfying. Mathers clearly feels at home south of the border, using Mexican details (religious icons, Day of the Dead skull masks) to bring a sly whimsy to her spare compositions. Her watercolor palette zings with cool purples and splashes of hot pink and sunny yellow. The penultimate scene of Nanita in her white First Communion dress before Our Lady of Guadalupe is particularly poignant. Ages 3-8. (Oct.) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-Nanita's father, a shoemaker, works so hard that he doesn't have time to make shoes for his own daughter. Thus, the feisty heroine takes matters into her own hands and makes her own pair of shoes for her First Communion before Our Lady of Guadalupe. Her odd leather creations, however, are nothing less than enchanted and take her far, far away into a land of mysterious danger. She is imprisoned in an onerous household where her many slavish duties include the nightly baking of delicious flan. Just as Nanita grows so weary she can no longer laugh at the antics of a caged bird, the feathery friend guides her back to what is now surely the most beautiful house in the world-her very own. Her father is so happy to see her that he makes fine, white pigskin shoes for her Communion and they celebrate with a fiesta for everyone, complete with the girl's tasty dessert. The book is illustrated in a kaleidoscope of folkloric imagery and colors with an easy recipe for the same magical flan.Selene S. This is one of my family's favorite picture books. It has the magic and adventure of a fairy tale without monsters to kill or a princess that needs rescuing. A spunky female protagonist rescues herself with the help of a hilarious parrot. The illustrations are as good as the writing, with funny details that children can study while they are listening.

Call me a skeptic, but I think there are better ways to make flan. Soy sauce? Crabmeat? Pickle relish? Nanita's flan recipe wouldn't go over well here in rural Manitoba. Yuck!Still, it's not a bad book. The pictures are nice, and the accompanying 8-track tape has some catchy tunes ("Walk With Me Jesus" played on the zither is an especially nice touch.)

I have used the recipe at the back of this book and copied it into my cookbook. It is very good and I recommend it...especially to folks who, perhaps, don't much like flan (me). It opened up flan for me and I have since investigated other variations. Personally, I thought the story was a bit strange, but the recipe is awesome.

Sweeps you away with magical words and pictures. Campbell Geeslin's childlike approach to any subject charms the kid and the adult. I found myself going back and reading it again and again.I have been collecting all his books.
