MIA KALEF is the founder of Emerging Families, a program of therapy, education, and research for the pre- and perinatal period. She works with families throughout the childbearing years to resolve the effects of pre- and perinatal challenges, and with adults retrospectively. She is a lifetime member of the Association of Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Health and is in private practice in Vancouver, Canada. The author lives in Vancouver, Canada.

The subject matter here is quite contentious and many may disagree with the findings proposed by the author Mia Kalef, but at the very least I think it’s worth listening to other opinions before making a concrete decision on something yourself. The writing is certainly empathetic and you can feel that Kalef has a real passion on an emotional as well as professional level for her chosen field. The implications of the birthing process from a purely scientific level are clearly distressing with possible long standing trauma in some cases, and further understanding of this will inevitably be undertaken on a wider scale. A very rewarding book that opens the door on culturally and scientifically held beliefs.

I loved this book on such a deep, soul level. Absolutely recommend. The author really takes you on a deep and healing journey that is essential you not only your children/future children, but to yourself as well!

I absolutely loved this book. Gave me a good look at what it feels like to be a baby how intune they are with themselves and the world around them. It also gave me an amazing tool that we already know but sometimes forget.

I found The Secret Life of Babies to be an extremely thought provoking book and one that requires serious thought and a deal more research in this area. Lots of our preconceived nature on the subject are challenged here and in a way that is educational rather than preachy which is what I have previously experienced in past reading I have done. An eye-opening read that should have gained a far greater readership than it currently has, but as a fan myself I’ll be sure to spread the word and encourage others to do the same. (This is an unbiased book review and the opinions given here are 100% my own.)

More thought and more research needs to be given to this topic. In a modern world where technology trumps instinct nature and compassion we need to consider our nature and how our early experience from the physical to the spiritual can help or hinder our lives and our potential. Great book.

In picking up "The Secret Life of Babies" I found that I held in my hand not just a book but the thoughtful expression of one persons take on what Thich Nhat Hanh called "Inter-being".Mia Kalef does a masterful job. She weaves together the inherent awareness at the core on one's embodied presence with cultural context as it greets each person from the moments of conception. She gives hope that we can each live our unique song within conditionality. She does this from both the perspective of comprehensive and apprehensive knowing through the dance of story and scientific supports.She does an excellent job of building through her words the felt sense of a relational field that gives expression of the Human Being at its most formative level.This book is well worth the read and the additional time to comprehend and resonate with its implications. Implications of the early life as a possible gateway experience that go a long way toward anchoring a luminous future. A future that she illustrates on the concrete level but one pointed toward by such philosopher/theologians as Teilhard de Chardin(The Phenomena of Man) and Thomas Berry(The Great Wirk:Our Way Into The Future).Well Done Mia!!

In an age when even the birth process is being taken over by machines and an ethic of efficiency, evidenced by the increased use of technology and caesarean births, this book is a refreshing, and balanced plea to remember that Life knows how to do life—naturally. And don't be fooled. While this book seems to be about babies, it is really about the making of humans—the adults we all become and the institutions, political, economic, educational, that we construct with the template and imprints that were laid down in our pre-birth and birth experiences. The book is grounded in solid research and a clinician's personal experience of client's memory of their earliest experiences. The principles found in The Secret Life of Babies can be applied practically, as I have applied them, to our everyday lives. Kalef powerfully points out that the quality of consciousness with which we welcome souls into this life is arguably the social justice issue of our day. Transform the birthing process and we just might transform our society. Highly recommended.
