It wasn't easy getting through Healing the Fracture Child by Fran Waters. Her writing is excellent and clear, but the material can be troubling. Every time I saw aspects of myself or one of my children in the case studies, I had to take a break, then go back and read several times. The book suggests that many mental illnesses are misdiagnosed and are really symptoms of dissociation, which itself is of mechanism of coping with trauma. The examples are all children but the material is equally applicable to adults. While probably most useful for clinicians, the book is valuable for mothers like me who are trying to understand our children's challenges. Dr. Waters is extremely convincing in her suggestion that many symptoms of mental illness may be triggered by trauma. Her definition of trauma is expansive, and I'm sure nearly everyone who works with children or adults would find the book useful in developing a trauma-informed approach, no matter what their specialty.Again, as a non-clinician, I felt it extremely useful to think about mental illness as a reaction to trauma, a kind of mis-placed energy, rather than as a parasite that needs to be exorcized. This is a more gentle and respectful approach whereby all aspects of a person is recognized and valued and ultimately redirected in a healthful way.I recommend this book highly.

This is a must-read book and one to have on hand for clinical practice. I appreciate the integration of theory and research as well as the case studies and examples written throughout the book. This is also a great resource for adoptive parents, like myself, to understand and help children with trauma, especially those with severe maternal deprivation and raised in an orphanage . I've used some of the art therapy ideas to help my child find his voice and communicate his feelings.

As a pediatrician who has cared for children with DID, I strongly recommend this book to therapists or physicians working with children with DID and/or trauma histories. It offers a wealth of very well researched information as well as many very specific ideas and suggestions that can be integrated into a treatment plan. The personal stories included of clients in whom these strategies have been successful are also very helpful. I believe it would also be useful for parents, both to improve understanding of the condition as well as to offer ideas for strategies that can be employed at home. Parents who have been at a loss for what to do will quickly feel, “I can do that!” The author's grasp of the topic, commitment to research and education, as well as her compassion for the people she works with all are clearly evidenced in this book. She also has managed to present a rather complicated topic in a very readable format, accessible to lay people and therapists alike. Maybe most importantly, this is a very hopeful book for families who often are feeling very discouraged.

Must read book for therapists working with children and adolescents who have endured trauma! Very rich in knowledge, research and successful cases of healing. It has provided not only guidance for me in my work but more importantly hope that my clients can grow and heal.

Very well written and informative.

Professionally written and highly informational.

This book is a paradigm shift on trauma and is crucial for any professional or parent dealing with trauma. On a side note the kindle book is missing pages and pictures

Healing the Fractured Child, by Fran S. Waters, is one of the most comprehensive books on assessment, treatment, and supporting parents/teachers, throughout the therapeutic process that I have read. It is difficult to put the book down. Generally, I read a portion of the book during my lunch break, and apply what I have learned in sessions that afternoon! Healing the Fractured Child has expanded my clinical skills, immensely, and continues to fuel my passion for working with children and adolescents, who have Dissociative Disorders. I started a parent support group and highly recommend Healing the Fractured Child to parents. I am extremely grateful for Fran’s extensive clinical expertise and her ability to make the interventions so applicable through her creative authorship, which includes case studies. Thank you, Fran!Michele M. Yarberry, LPC, NCC
