Four Seasons in Rome: On Twins, Insomnia, and the Biggest Funeral in the History of the World, by Anthony Doerr

Review

"Anthony Doerr is dazzling in this book, in the way he celebrates the joys as well as the pain of being a parent and in love, being a writer and being in Rome, reminding us that certain experiences never grow stale when they are expressed through the fresh eyes of a real writer." -- Azar Nafisi, author of Reading Lolita in Tehran"Doerr's journal is a love letter written with the ear of a musician, the sensibility of a Buddha, the heart of an inamorato. Rome is the chosen beloved, but Doerr's true subject is writing." -- Sandra Cisneros, author of Caramelo"I loved this book which, in turn, made me laugh and weep at the relentless twins, Owen and Henry, who never sleep, the descriptions of Rome, the clouds, the light -- especially the light -- the people Doerr meets on the street, again the light, Pliny, Jonah's feet dangling from the Sistine Chapel ceiling, Shauna's steadfastness, Doerr's generous and intelligent spirit, his discerning eye and his perfect prose. Complimenti!" -- Lily Tuck, author of Interviewing Matisse"Anthony Doerr found himself in the perfect Eternal City with the eternal Paternal Problem: how to care for two beautiful newborn twins while still doing his work as a writer and student and observer. The result is a funny, precise, touching account of cultural barricades crossed and fatherly exhaustions overcome; a story of the universalities of parenting and the specificities of Roman life that will lift the heart of every parent and delight the mind of every lover of Italy." -- Adam Gopnik, author of Through the Children's Gate and From Paris to the Moon

While I can imagine this book not appealing to everyone, it is the perfect read for anyone who (a) has traveled in and loved Italy and (b) has read and loved Anthony Doerr's novel "All the Light We Cannot See". As I can tick both of those boxes, I spent most of my time reading this book with a grin on my face. Doerr's descriptions of being seduced by Italy, as he tried to begin writing "All the Light..." are completely engaging. It was a rare opportunity to observe an author as he dealt with day-to-day life during a year of exceptional circumstances -- living in a foreign country, while at the same time caring for newborn twins with his wife. A real delight.

I read this book on the plane headed to Rome, and it really made me rethink some of our plans. We visited some of the places mentioned in the book to experience a real Rome neighborhood, and it was one of my favorite evenings there. The book itself was a real page turner, in that you become invested in their experiences during that year of their lives and imagine yourself there, experiencing it right along with them. Anthony Doerr is just an excellent writer, and I can't wait to see what he publishes next, no matter what genre.

Wonderfully written memoir by the author of All the Light We Cannot See. The author, his wife and their twin 6 month old boys relocate to Rome for a year where he hopes to write a book "about the French occupation during WWII". His descriptions of Rome, the disorientation of being a new parent, life in a foreign country are all great. And every time he expresses doubt about the book he is trying to write you want to whisper into the pages "You're going to finish it. And it will be AMAZING"

I loved this book. I read it right before we took a trip to Rome, and I found myself seeing the city through Doerr's eyes. His tale was pure delight. I became a huge fan of Doerr's after reading All the Light We Cannot See. I found his eloquence mesmerizing and his storytelling addictive. I had lower expectations for this book, since it was a memoir and apparently about his struggle to research for All the Light while living on a stipend in Rome with his family. His writing did not disappoint, not in his storytelling and not in his content. His journals about living in Rome spoke to me as a writer, a traveller, and a parent. And they reminded me how sparse and non-visual my journaling can be. To write about things while you experience them in the way that you experience them is truly astounding. I highly recommend this!

I have really enjoyed the opportunity to read Anthony Doerr's Four Seasons in Rome this term. If Robert Hughes' book on Rome is seen as something of an objective analysis of Roman history and culture, Doerr's book is a much more subjective reading experience. It's instantly engaging and welcoming to the reader, creating a rich sense of place with a narrative that feels often like poetry. There is no sense of anything other than an honest account of the Doerr's family experiences in Rome: no underlying cynicism or inflated sense of ego to get between the reader and the text. The author's gentle attitude is often expressing a profound sense of wonder not only of Rome itself, but, I would argue, his lovely family seen through the lens of Rome and the Roman people. One of my favorite passages is the following excerpt concerning his son; it really captures the purity of personal experience and thought conveyed within these pages.Swaddled in his Moses basket, wires trailing out the bottom, his monitor flashing green, green, green, his entire four-pound body motionless except his eyelids, it seemed he understood everything I was working so hard to understand: his mother's love, his brother's ceaseless crying; he was already forgiving me for my shortcomings as a father; he was the distillation of a dozen generations, my grandpa's grandpa's grandpa, all stripped into a single flame and stowed still-burning into the thin slip of his ribs. I'd hold him at the window and he'd stare out into the night, blue tributaries of veins pulsing in his neck, his big eyelids slipping down now and then, and it would feel as if tethers were falling away, and the two of us were gently rising, through the glass, through the trees, through interweaving layers of atmosphere, into whatever was beyond the sky. One aspect of the book that I particularly appreciate is the author's emphasis of understanding a place through the eyes of its people. He's not a simple tourist or traveller, he's experiencing Rome through the act of truly living there: mingling in the markets, strolling the ancient streets, speaking--or attempting to speak--with its residents, and, in short, truly living in the place. I know my upcoming visit will be but a fraction of the length of his, but I hope I may leave Rome with a much greater sense of what this city is all about when my time comes to head home. Like Doerr, I don't see most of this knowledge coming from being a tourist per se, but as something along the lines of a (very) short-term resident.
