Review

"Raw, realistic, and emotional, this graphic novel puts a harrowing spin on immigration and the risks people take to seek opportunities in other countries.... This graphic novel...makes truths about humanity abundantly clear with the frightening situations and tragic outcomes conveyed through the narrative, emotive illustrations, and the true story in the last five pages. Middle and high schools can use this book in curriculum and recommend it to comic enthusiasts." - VOYA Magazine"The horrors Ebo witnesses, the impossibilities he survives, are haunting testimony to the human spirit. Artemis Fowl series creator Colfer (who taught elementary school in Italy, Saudi Arabia, and Tunisia) leads the team... in transforming staggering statistics (UNHCR's 2017 data cites 65.6 million have been forcibly displaced) into a resonating story about a single boy and what remains of his family. Italian artist Rigano's gorgeously saturated panels-rich in details, affecting in its captured expressions, landscapes made spectacular as if a reminder of everyday beauty despite tragedy-proves to be an enhancing visual gift to the already stirring story. A creators' note and quotes from real refugees close out this illuminating, important volume. " - Booklist, STARRED Review"Moving and heartbreaking... Ebo's story is powerful and necessary, and will encourage readers to help refugees in whatever ways they can." - Bookish"Action-filled and engaging but considerate of both topic and audience, Ebo's story effectively paints a picture of a child refugee's struggle in a world crisscrossed by hostile borders." - Kirkus, STARRED Review"Moving and informative, Illegal puts an unforgettable human face to the issue of immigration; it is recommended for all readers of middle school level or higher." - ForeWord, STARRED Review"Achingly poignant graphic novel" - Publishers Weekly, STARRED Review"A thrilling and moving addition to any collection, and ideal supplemental reading in classes where students are studying immigration." - School Library Journal"Illegal powerfully visualizes the current struggles being faced by refugees and emigrants...through stunning, intimate visuals" - Entertainment Weekly

If you are a human being, or know a human being, then I would highly recommend this book. It's unbelievable what Ebo has to go through, and yet completly believable. And although the characters in this book are fictional, the situation they're in is very real. I've been a fan of Eoin Colfer's work for some time, and he never disappoints. The artwork is stunning and the book is high quality. I belive if everyone reads it, everything would be so much more clear. I loved this book and will definitely be reading it over and over again. "How can a human being be illegal?"

My students adore this book! I can't keep it on the shelf!

This book is awesome. Using it to teach literature circles in middle school. Awesome illustrations & content. Very engaging.

My daughter likes the book since it is well written

Ebo’s brother Kwame is missing. But Ebo knows where he’s gone: he’s gone to find their sister. Life in Libya is hard, so Ebo and Kwame’s sister, Hannah, left and promised to send back money once she was installed in Europe with a new job and more money. But since she left, Ebo and Kwame have heard nothing from her. So when Ebo wakes up one morning and Kwame is gone, Ebo knows he must go after him. What follows is the harrowing, heartbreaking story of Ebo’s journey through dangerous cities, deserts, and the ocean.Wow. Look, I cry a lot, and am no stranger to crying whilst reading. But this book made me sob. Like, uncontrollable tears running down my face. The refugee story is often a sad and intense one, and Ebo’s is certainly no exception. And then, when you think about Ebo’s story in the context of it being a real thing happening to real people in this world that we all share, and the US is actively turning away people in similar if not the same situation, well, its depressing. But importantly so. One must also consider the fact that thousands of children, thousands of people are dying, and no one seems to care. It’s a deeply sad book that will cause lots of introspection, but for me, that’s a good thing. This is an issue that needs more attention. The stunning artwork added to the impact. Seeing Ebo’s expressions - the heartbreak, loss, and hope playing out across his face – made what was already an intense, powerful story all the more affecting. I loved pretty everything about this book, and I hope you take the time to read it. 5 stars. Thanks to Baker & Taylor, Netgalley and Sourcebooks for the free paper and electronic advance copies, which I received in exchange for an honest review. Illegal is available for purchase now!

I was completely surprised to see Illegal attached to Eoin Colfer's name. From my own readership as a young adult, I best knew Colfer for his Artemis Fowl series, and I had no idea he was up to something so different.Illegal is a heart-wrenching, poignant tale of Ebo, a young boy who tracks down the older brother who has left him, so they can journey together to find their older sister in Europe. The boys' bond is beautiful, a picture of supportive brothers who look out for each other despite the deadly and tricky circumstances that surround them. They must weigh the hopes around them at every turn even though most of them don't pan out. The text and graphics work together to make the story an emotional journey despite its short length. Readers will be holding their breath, waiting for the moment where they find out if the boys ever make it to Europe, if they ever find Sisi (their older sister). My only qualm with the story is that I wish it was longer. I would've liked to see a bit more depth to it. As is, it's told in two perspectives- now and then. I think it would have been an interesting juxtaposition to add their sister's story as the boys underwent their journey.Even more, it could have hammered home the difference in the life the brothers were living versus the lives they were dreaming they could have.

Illegal is relevant and honest. It tells the story, based on real refugee accounts, of a boy in Africa trying to get to Europe. The adversity he faces is unbelievable, packed in a small raft leaking water while unable to swim, traveling through the desert on foot with no water, yet is what refugees throughout the world are facing. Refugee stories are hard to accept and understand, especially for young adults. This graphic novel will appeal to students interested in the topic and also to reluctant readers. It will be an aid for educators teaching about refugees and immigration because of it's visual nature and relatable characters. The amazing visuals and perfect amount of text make this a perfect selection for even 5th and 6th grade reluctant readers. Even though it is fiction, it is rooted in nonfiction, which will appeal to teachers and parents who are still not open to graphic novels as good literature. The subject matter is deep and somewhat mature in nature so it should be noted as a YA book, rather than an elementary selection.
